Ringo wasn’t even the best drummer in the Beatles

Being an Ultravox fan I always thought Warren Caan was quite under rated. Bit dated now but as a kid I was impressed with the Burundi style drumming from Adam and the Ants.

Re: Favourite Drums on Song
I find that as the years pass by I'm more and more preferring musicality to technique in my drummers.

So my five favourites right now, with no silly claims that they are 'the best' are:

Ringo
Keith Moon
Terry Williams
Dave Mattacks
Al Jackson Jr

Phil Collins was pretty musical, too.

I think what links them is that they would all poke you in the eye with a drumstick if you asked them to play a solo. Maybe Terry or Keith might go for a 15 second break, but no more than that. I think I've only ever enjoyed one drum solo in my life (Kenney Jones on I'm Losing You) and I don't think I'll lose any sleep if I never hear it again.

Of course there are/were some wonderful skin-thrashers around that I thoroughly enjoy at the right moment.

I like the drums on U2’s Sunday Bloody Sunday & Simple Minds don’t you forget about me….how technically good that is I don’t know but the intros are excellent.

MMG I'd hate to disappoint ;-). I'm.not wrong though, it's a great bit of drumming.

Re: Favourite Drums on Song
Dave Mattacks on Sloth - his incredible drumming on that gets overlooked because of the virtuosity of Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick.

Big Pauls's drumming is brutally pummelling live.
The Wait is my favourite and KJ definitely influenced this lot.

Agree mate. Not TOO far behind NIN imho.

Yuck to most of those suggestions save a few.

Paul Ferguson, Killing Joke, Follow The Leader. The first time I had ever heard a real drummer playing along with a drum machine. It blew my mind as a kid banging away in the shed. In fact, Paul Ferguson on ANYTHING by Killing Joke, one of the most influential industrial rock bands of all time

Pete Thomas on "Rocking horse road" by Elvis Costello and the Attractions and the earlier "The beat" on This Years Model
